What people sometimes say
- “I left everything behind when I moved here.”
- “In my own language, I’m a different person.”
- “I don’t belong there anymore, and not quite here either.”
Moving to a new country can be chosen or forced, hopeful or devastating, and often all of these at once. Along with home, people may lose a language in which they feel fully themselves, the people who knew them as children, and the ease of being understood without explanation. We work with what was left behind, what was found, and the self that lives between them. Dr. Porat grew up across countries and languages, and Dr. Schmiedl-Neuburg works in English and German.
We meet in person on Hilliard Street, near Harvard Square, or by video. The first half hour is a free conversation, with no obligation.
