Keren Porat, Psy.D., by a window

Founder

Keren Porat, Psy.D.

Licensed psychologist · Psychoanalyst

Keren Porat has practiced as a clinical psychologist in Greater Boston for nearly twenty years. Her earlier work includes research on childhood adversity and brain development at McLean Hospital, DBT training on McLean’s 3East program, and community mental health work at The Home for Little Wanderers in Roslindale.

She completed the two-year Postgraduate Fellowship Program at the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis (MIP) and four further years of psychoanalytic training there, and has been on its faculty since 2020. She trained under the close mentorship of the late Malcolm Owen Slavin, PhD, a co-founder of MIP, founder of its Postgraduate Fellowship Program, and a formative voice in the American relational tradition. Winnicott is the thinker she returns to most.

Growing up across countries and languages taught her early that a self is never only one thing. Her work is grounded in curiosity about how each person has learned to attach, defend, make meaning and live within the circumstances of their own life.

Hilmar Schmiedl-Neuburg, Ph.D.

Psychotherapist

Hilmar Schmiedl-Neuburg, Ph.D.

Psychotherapist · Licensed in Germany, pre-licensed in Massachusetts, practicing under supervision

Dr. Hilmar Schmiedl-Neuburg has practiced psychotherapy in Germany since 2005, licensed there as a Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapie, and trained as a Gestalt therapist at Werkstatt Nord. In the United States he completed an M.S. in mental health counseling at UMass Boston.

He holds a doctorate and a habilitation in philosophy from Kiel University and is a senior lecturer in philosophy at UMass Boston. He serves on the faculty of MIP, where he has taught Bion and André Green, and co-directs the Institute for Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and Cultural Studies in Berlin.

Philosophy gave him a long patience with questions that do not resolve, and an ear for the ones a person has been circling for years without quite asking.

Jill Engerman, LICSW

Clinical supervisor

Jill Engerman, LICSW

Psychoanalyst · Licensed independent clinical social worker

Jill Engerman is a psychoanalyst and a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute for Psychoanalysis. Malcolm Owen Slavin was her mentor, and she was among those closest to him; together they co-chaired MIP’s Postgraduate Fellowship Program and taught in both the Fellowship and MIP’s analytic training program. Her MSW is from the Smith College School for Social Work, and she maintains a private practice in Concord.

At CIPSE she and Dr. Porat have built much of the clinic’s thinking together, carrying forward what they both learned from Mal: that the analyst is changed by the work too, that loss and creativity live close together, and that clinicians think best in good company, not alone. She supervises the clinicians practicing here, co-leads the group supervisions and consults on the clinic’s development.

The Books That Keep Us Company

Every therapist carries a few voices into the room. These are ours: psychoanalysts first, then the philosophers, theologians and artists who keep them honest. If you know them already, you’ll find people here who love them too.

Touch a spine to read about the book. Scroll along the shelf for more.

You don’t need to have read any of them to begin.

And if a book that mattered to you is missing, tell us. We’d love to make room for it.

A shelf for your books

What would you add?

Many of the books that changed us were pressed into our hands by someone else. Yours can be anything that has stayed with you: a novel or a poem, a memoir, philosophy or theology, a book about art, even a self-help book that genuinely helped. It doesn’t need to be about psychology, or to be “serious”. It only needs to have mattered.

This shelf is waiting for its first books.

We review every suggestion, and a book appears on the shelf only once we have approved it. Books are shown without names. Please leave out anything personal.
